The lighthouse route
Menorca, the tranquil Balearic island, is not only famous for its pristine beaches and turquoise waters but also for its network of historic lighthouses that dot the coastline. The Lighthouse Route (Ruta de los Faros) offers an unforgettable journey, combining spectacular sea views, rugged cliffs, and a touch of maritime history.
What is the Lighthouse Route?
The Lighthouse Route is a scenic itinerary along Menorca’s coastline connecting several iconic lighthouses. Originally built to guide sailors safely along the island’s shores, these lighthouses today offer visitors a glimpse into Menorca’s maritime heritage while showcasing its natural beauty.
Highlights of the Route
1. Faro de Favàritx
Located in the northeast, Favàritx Lighthouse is famous for its striking black-and-white stripes and dramatic volcanic landscape. The nearby rugged cliffs and grey sands make it a perfect spot for photography and a quiet walk.
2. Faro de Cavalleria
Situated on the northernmost point of the island, Cavalleria Lighthouse overlooks stunning cliffs and the wild northern coast. The area around the lighthouse is also home to some of Menorca’s best hiking trails.
3. Faro de Punta Nati
On the west coast, Punta Nati Lighthouse provides panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the jagged cliffs below. Sunset from this point is particularly spectacular, making it a favorite for visitors seeking magical golden-hour moments. During the summer months, however, access by car is restricted in the evening due to the narrow road and limited parking. At sunset, the area can only be reached by shuttle bus or by soft transport such as walking or cycling.
4. Faro de Cap d’Artrutx
Located on the southwestern tip of Menorca, the Cap d'Artrutx Lighthouse is more than just a navigational landmark; it is an iconic symbol of the island's maritime heritage. Its distinctive black-and-white stripes create a breathtaking backdrop as we cruise past its rugged cliffs. Today, the lighthouse has evolved into a trendy bar and restaurant, making it one of the island's most sought-after spots. While many tourists gather on its terraces, the most exclusive way to enjoy the view is from the water.
On our private boat trips, we often pass this majestic lighthouse as we head toward the pristine southern coves. Watching the sun dip below the horizon near the cliffs of Artrutx from the wooden deck of our traditional Llaut is an experience that stays with you forever—a true moment of Mediterranean 'slow living' that connects the history of the island with the beauty of the sea.
At the southern tip of Menorca, Cap d’Artrutx Lighthouse is close to the popular town of Ciutadella. Its picturesque location and accessible surroundings make it an ideal stop for families or a relaxed afternoon visit.
5. Faro de Ciutadella (Port Entrance)
This lighthouse stands at the entrance of Ciutadella’s port and is the first glimpse of Menorca for many arriving by sea. For our guests, Sa Farola is the first landmark we see during our boat trip as we leave the harbor to explore the coast, and it is also the last one welcoming us back when we return to port. Thanks to its central location, it’s easy to combine a visit with a walk through Ciutadella’s historic center. It also marks the entrance to Sa Farola cove, the closest swimming spot to the old town, perfect for a quick dip if you’re exploring the city. The small stone terraces built into the rocks are typically Menorcan and offer a simple, scenic place to relax by the water, marking the perfect transition between the sea and the town
6. Faro de l’Illa del Aire
Located on the tiny islet south of Punta Prima, l’Illa del Aire Lighthouse is one of Menorca’s most iconic coastal landmarks. Surrounded by turquoise waters and accessible only by boat, it offers an unforgettable view and a serene atmosphere.
